What
Unique, the first of it’s kind and now entering our fourth year, the Beyond Asana Teacher Training combines the curriculum of a 250 hour yoga training with an in-depth fundraising project with our partner non-profit organization, buildOn.  Each student will have the duration of the training to raise $5,000 for our project and with these funds we will travel to Haiti in February of 2016 to break ground on a school. Our students have raised over $200,000 since our start in 2012 and that number continues to grow. Our training is all about growth and transformation. From the way we teach the asana, to the deep personal growth exercises, to the stuff that comes up when you fundraise, to the life-altering experience of living with host families for a week and building a school in Haiti- each area is designed to help move you BEYOND what you know and into the unknowable truth only this deep work can reveal. It’s big girl/boy stuff if you will. Our graduates have certainly taken their practices to the next level with many of them teaching at studios, gyms and centers within the first 6 months of their completion. Others have moved on to become yoga studio managers, start their own yoga businesses, and go on additional treks (as trek assistants) with buildOn. We are here to draw out your deepest potential and give you the tools to help transform your life. We are here to guide you as you discover your own unique contribution to this world.

Why

We believe in the power of community both in our own back yard and across the globe. We believe that change really does come from within and it starts with us (Gandhi knows what he’s talking about).
We want to foster yoga teachers that are well rounded in both the knowledge of alignment, the emotional and energy bodies and conscious activism.

Who

This training is for you if ..

You are passionate about taking your yoga practice to a deeper level past asanas and into a richer experience.

You are hard working, dedicated and want to learn how to live your life with more purpose

You believe in activating change in this world and aren’t afraid to get your hands dirty.

You are conscious, inclusive and are looking to connect with a tribe of like-minded yogis where you can be you.

You realize that this kind of training is hard work AND heart work and are committed to putting the time and energy in- even when you don’t feel like it.

You want to learn to teach yoga in a way that provides students with a full experience that encompasses the body, mind, heart and spirit.

You can laugh at your mistakes, cry at your brilliance and dance like no one is watching. (Or at least be willing to learn how…)

You believe in a world where everyone and everything is held sacred and equal and want to be a part of creating this shift.

This training is not right for you if …

You are looking to learn how to master your handstands and get into ever more advanced posture.

This is all good but it’s just not what we are about. We are Beyond Asana after all. While the learning the asanas is a big part of our training, the point is to keep you and others safe, open and healthy so they can take us deeper.

You want a more classical approach to yoga.
We respect and honor the traditions of yoga and all the texts that come with it. At the same time we resonate with a more modern approach to yoga using contemporary experiences and pulling from more than just the classic teachings of yoga.

You aren’t into fundraising to build a school in or traveling to Haiti.
We get that everyone has different passions. This particular training is for those passionate about service abroad. There is a lot of power in connecting with another culture and being out of your comfort zone. They say you teach what you know and we know THIS. We want you to know it too but only if you want to.

You want to coast by and do some of the work and not really put 100% in.
We are hard workers and expect you to work hard too. While we understand that everyone’s interpretation of hard work is different, having a strong work ethic is important for this training as we hold our students lovingly at this standard. We see what you are capable are and are committed to helping you see it too.

You take yourself too seriously.
This will not be a good fit. We laugh and cry and dance and play games and have potlucks. We are a community, a tribe. While you don’t need to be Suzy or Sammy smiles 24/7 Debbie or Darin downers aren’t really our thing either.

You are a drama queen or king.

We are a community, a tribe. Not a clique. We expect everyone to respect each other, our similarities and our differences. We are all awesome in our own way. Gossiping and the like only dims our lights.

We want you bright.

Topics Covered

Asana

A good deal of time is spent on the art and the science of moving and instructing students into each posture in a way that fosters deeper body awareness, safety and accountability. With this knowledge not only will you gain the tools to transform your practice, you will also be empowered to help others do the same. When students feel safe in their bodies, they are more likely to drop down into their hearts.
Adjustments

In addition to learning how to get into and hold each posture, you will learn how to safely and effectively adjust your students in a way that honors both their physical and energetic bodies, as well as your own. Connecting with people in this way is a great honor and responsibility. We will give you the tools and guidance you need to feel confident in your touch and intention.

Anatomy

We will take the asanas even deeper by going into the anatomy of the body and how the postures relate as a whole. This will give you a deeper understanding of the body, the yoga practice and how to keep yourself and your students safe and healthy.
Business of Yoga

We will spend time discussing the ins and outs of this very important component to becoming an effective teacher. You will learn clear, thorough and very useful and practical ways to get your voice out there, make what you are worth and share your own unique gifts with those that need it the most. We will also cover how to move through this business with integrity while staying true to your own authentic voice and needs.
Personal Growth

Part of being a yoga teacher who really makes a difference is first knowing yourself and embracing all aspects with love, respect and compassion. We will spend time helping you travel deep inside to connect with your shadows, those limiting beliefs that are holding you back and an understanding of how your past can create a purposeful future. This is the stuff often overlooked but oh so important.

Service/Fundraising

This component is a very special and vital part of the training. Each student will work to raise $5,000 for our partner non-profit, buildOn. With these funds we will travel to Haiti to break ground on a school. Each weekend we will check in and support your fundraising efforts through various discussions, applicable tools and exercises, as well as different manifestation practices. Expect a deep exploration of what it means to put your consciousness work into action.

Chakras

We will spend time tapping into each Chakra and how to connect with and balance these specific energies. Cultivating Chakra awareness can influence every aspect of your life including: your relationships, your work, your creativity, the way you raise your children, they way you love, your relationship with money and your deeper vision of how you want your life to unfold. The Chakras rock!

Philosophy

We will dive into Yogic philosophy while often offering a modern spin to make it easier to apply to your current life. You will learn the origins of this practice and spend time exploring the Eight Limbs of Yoga and The Yoga Sutras in a way that is applicable to your every day life.

More Details

Books

You will be required to purchase and read a list of books to help deepen and expand what we will be learning in the training. Check back to see a complete list.
Homework

Each weekend you will receive homework to help integrate what we cover during the weekend. Some homework will be required and some will be optional.
Classes

For a dedicated yoga teacher, a steady and committed practice is vital. You will be required to attend twenty additional open classes to be completed in the eight months of the training (about 2.5 classes per month). These classes are to be split between Maura and I (Brittany) and may also include workshops and retreats. Alternative options will be provided for those traveling out of the state to be a part of this training. **You will receive a 10 class card to both Yoga Home and The Yoga Garden to fulfill this requirement.**

Quizzes, Final Exam and Final Projects

During the training you will receive a few quizzes to help us see how the information is landing. Towards the end of the training you will receive a take home final exam as well as a few other final projects. All of this is to help you deepen and integrate what you have been learning over the past eight months.

Yoga Props

Included in your tuition are two blocks, a blanket and a strap that you will with you every weekend to support your asana exploration.

About buildOn

buildOn’s Global School Construction Program provides rural communities in developing nations across the globe with access to education. They break ground on a new school every six days with the help of U.S. afterschool program members, donors and parents who have provided over 700,000 volunteer workdays to build schools for their children. Through a methodology that puts gender equality at the forefront and villagers in control, they provide not only schools, but also the knowledge and the power to change entire communities.

buildOn’s true power resides in the fact that their classrooms are constructed in partnership with the very people who will be benefiting from them. buildOn provides the funding, engineering, materials, skilled labor and supervision. In turn, the village provides a gender balanced leadership team, thousands of hours of volunteer labor and a promise that girls will attend the school in equal numbers with boys.
For the 2014 teacher training, students will be raising funds to build a school in Haiti. With the support and guidance of both Maura and I, each participant will raise $5,000 for the project and will have the duration of the teacher training to do so. Upon completion of the training our group will travel to Haiti to help break ground on the school we raised the funds for.

Each weekend we will spend time on your fundraising efforts, discussing your progress, answering any questions and supporting you in this process. We will create a steady foundation within the training to help keep your efforts sustainable and focused in order to achieve the goal of raising the $5,000. The experienced staff at buildOn will also provide support.

The money you raise goes ENTIRELY to this project. Approximately $3,000 will go directly to help build the school and the other $2,000 will pay for your flight and accommodations while in Haiti. Participants will be paired up and living with a host family for the duration of your 8-10 day stay. Every day there will be time to practice yoga, work in the village and process the experience.  All meals and activities are included. The purpose of this trip is to allow you to connect with the product of your fundraising efforts, to experience life in a poverty stricken area and to be a part of creating sustainable education for the inhabitants of this land. As a result you will strengthen your interpersonal and communication skills, become engaged in a project that connects local and global communities and embark on a once and a lifetime travel experience. This part of the training is so very near and dear to our hearts. We hope you can join us!

Frequently Asked Questions

Q. What if I am new to yoga?
A. We recommend having at least two years of experience before taking our training. In addition to critical focus on alignment and anatomy, we also get into some deep emotional work as well. It is helpful to have some experience before taking this training. But everyone is different. Contact us- link to contact page if you aren’t sure or we recommend filling out the application and seeing how you feel as you answer the questions. This often helps with the decision process.
Q. What if I have already received my 200-hour certification and am teaching?
A. This is just fine! We have had several yoga teachers go through our training. Many choose to because our training is so different, some just want more experience. Sure you may have already taken a training but you were different than you are now and so are we. We are all always growing. There is always more to learn.
Q. What if I don’t want to be a yoga teacher?
A. No worries! Often half our group says this in the beginning. Most of them change their minds half way through and some don’t. Either way, this training will deepen your own practice and help you to transform your life in big bold ways. You can use what you learn in this training in ways beyond just teaching the asana. This can affect your relationships, your work, your play, your self-esteem and the way you show up in the world.
Q. Do I get the $400 deposit back if I don’t get accepted?
A. Yes! If for some reason you are not accepted, we will refund your deposit. This is the only way we will give a refund though. Otherwise all payments are nonrefundable.
Q. What happens if I need to miss a day or a weekend?
A. We understand you have a life outside the training and sometimes you will need to miss. At the same time, this training is a deep commitment on every level- physical, mental, emotional and energetic. In order to get the most out of it, we expect you to do what you can to make it to each weekend. You are able to miss one full weekend and one day if absolutely necessary and we will need to know of these dates and the reasons in advance. If you miss more than this you will need to make up the hours in others ways outside of training (e.g. Taking a workshop of a retreat with us or someone we approve).
Q. How much time will this training take up in my life?
A. This really depends on how much you choose to put into it. In addition to our time together and the 20 classes you are expected to take with us, you are also given a substantial amount of homework each weekend that includes reading, journaling and practicing assignments. Then there is the time fundraising will take you. This depends on which route you decide to go. Some people get a lot from emails and social media others put on a lot of events. Some students equate it to a semester of college. It is a lot of work but also doable. It will require making space in your life to honor this new commitment but the time and energy you are putting in goes so much deeper. Remember, you are investing this time and energy into you and your transformation.

Q. Will I become Yoga Alliance Certified?
A. Yes! Our training is Yoga Alliance Certified and upon completion of the training you will receive a certificate. This certificate is dependent upon you completing all of your time with us, taking 20 classes outside of the training, completing your fundraising (or other project if you do not wind up raising all the funds). Once you receive your certificate of completion you will need to get certified via Yoga Alliance link to YA and pay a fee to get these specific credentials.
Q. Can I take the training if I don’t want to raise the money or go on the trek?
A. Bluntly stated, no. There are lots of trainings out there that do not do what we do. Actually no other training does exactly what we do. So if you decide to commit to this training it must be with the desire to fundraise to build a school with buildOn and travel on trek with us. If this isn’t for you, no worries, it just means this training isn’t for you.
Q. What happens if I don’t raise the entire $5,000? Do I still graduate and receive me certificate?
A. The fundraising project is a big part of our training. If for some reason you do not meet your goal (and yes, it has happened) we will deal with this on a case-to-case basis. But we do offer another options to make up the trek hours through service with buildOn locally. This is ONLY if you have not raised the money at the deadline. We expect every student to try their very best to raise the funds.

Q. Is going on trek safe.
A. It’s so safe. The trek leaders at buildOn are super experienced and highly trained to lead this treks, handle illnesses, injuries and anything else that may come up. They take their job very seriously and are passionate about making the experience a powerful one. While we are with host families we are always at least two to a house. Students have reported feeling safer in these villages than most other place.
Q. Will I need to get vaccinations?
While they are recommended, most are not mandatory. It depends on where you are going. You will receive all of this information and more as the trek gets closers. Don’t worry, we’ve got you covered.

Guest Teachers

We are so honored to welcome the following guest teachers who are expertly skilled and take the training to an even deeper level. The following trainings are included in the 250-hour training but are also open to the public .

Testimonials

It’s difficult to put into words how profoundly transformative the Beyond Asana yoga teacher training has been in my life. What Brittany and Maura have created is so much more than a teacher training. It’s a course in how to tap into your deepest potential and create the life your heart truly desires. The training is so well balanced, offering intense technical study in anatomy, asana, pranayama, philosophy, and much more, while also cultivating deep self-exploration, culminating in the trip of a lifetime. Both Brittany and Maura have mastered the art of creating a safe space to learn and grow, which enables students to be open, honest, and loving. Aside from creating deep shifts in my life, I also gained some of the most amazing friendships I’ve ever had, and I had a ton a fun doing it. Laughter, tears, hugs, dancing, chanting, screaming, and digging…I’m so grateful for everything I’ve experienced, all that I’ve gained, and all that continues to shift in my life as a direct result of this training.
Taylor Hendricks, RYT, Beyond Asana YTT Graduate, 2013

“The Beyond Asana Yoga Teacher Training program is like no other teacher training out there. Initially, when I began the training, my focus was around deepening my yoga practice. I wanted to learn more about the history of yoga, the muscle groups involved in different poses, and how to truly meditate. I not only learned all of these things and then some, but I also learned so much about myself- who I am as a person, how I show up in challenging times… I dug deeper and started to think about what I wanted to out of my life and what I wanted my imprint to be on the world. Maura and Brittany, in my eyes, are a dynamic duo. These two women who have challenged me to my core and have opened my eyes in ways I never expected – both on and off the mat. The service trip connected to this training is by far, one of the best moments and experiences I’ve ever had in my life. In fact, the service component is what initially attracted me to this training. When in your life will you ever have the opportunity to travel the world to create a positive change and to make a difference in someone else’s life? As a group, our initial intentions were to get into the village and begin working on a school that will provide a safe space for children and adults to become educated; a space where they can go to learn how to read and write. After being in the village and living with a family, we all quickly realized that the trip was much more than just building a school. The people of Ganeshpur, Nepal had opened my eyes and heart in ways that are indescribable. When I close my eyes, I can still feel the community, the love, the happiness, and the contentment that emanated from both the children and adults. The service trip was a life experience that I feel so incredibly grateful and lucky to have had. I will never forget the community in Ganeshpur and will continue to hold the memory and lessons taught to me close in my heart.”
–Maura Barrett Beyond Asana 2012 YTT Graduate

Brittany and Maura take the practice of yoga and charge it with a fire that is truly transformative. Beyond Asana is training in both the physical and the mystical, and empowers its students to seek inside themselves to find the answers to seemingly impossible questions: “Who am I? Why am I here? How can I help?” If you had asked me those questions last year, I would have stared at you blankly. Yet after completing the Beyond Asana YTT, I can’t imagine a time when those answers weren’t the guiding force of my life. The eight-month training is so purposefully designed to crack you open to your fullest potential. The things our class explored “beyond” the asana – the self, the world, each other – so perfectly complimented our study of yoga asana, pranayama, and meditation. Now, as an employed yoga teacher, I feel not only prepared to teach, but deeply inspired to do so. This training is pure magic.
Julianne Mesaric, RYT, Beyond Asana YTT Graduate, 2013

“The Beyond Asana yoga teacher training is a force that needs to be experienced. I have often tried to give words to my own experience with this training, but nothing ever seems to do it full justice. What I can say with authenticity is that the training has renewed purpose in my life. Brittany and Maura create a welcoming space for anyone that aspires to be a yoga teacher, and they challenge you as well as nurture you along the way. I can tell you from experience that when I signed up for the training, my personal yoga practice (and understanding of yoga as a whole) was pretty shaky. However, Brittany and Maura saw potential in me and cultivated my growth through the Beyond Asana training. This training not only focuses on the asana and anatomy, but will challenge you to go deeper into yoga philosophy, pranayama practice, meditation practice, and Chakra work. You will explore your personal connection with our global community through the study of conscious activism and fundraising work with BuildOn. You will also form deep and meaning relationships with your fellow teacher trainers, who will be your friends, your confidants, your support system, your travel companions, and your family.”
Aly Starkovich, Beyond Asana YTT Graduate, 2013

“Beyond Asana Teacher Training has changed my life in ways that are difficult to put into words. I didn’t necessarily even want to be a teacher when I applied. I applied because I wanted to dive deeper into my own practice (plus I loved practicing with Brittany and the service project excited me.) Now I am actually teaching and if you were to tell my 2013 self that I would be teaching yoga classes today I would not have believed you. I applied to the program hoping to learn more about the practice of yoga but I learned so much more about myself than I ever thought was possible, given it was a yoga training program. Maura & Brittany have crafted a beautiful program that includes all of the tools one needs to become truly effective and authentic teacher (if you choose to do so):  comprehensive asana study, anatomy, the ethics/business of yoga, how to use the chakras in your practice, in-depth personal growth, and the yoga sutras/philosophy of yoga. The Beyond Asana Teacher Training program is an experience that has life-changing power that will alter how you see, treat yourself & others, and act in the world. I am grateful I took this training and know what I learned will last a lifetime. Thank you, Maura & Brittany.”
